Robert Giroux has gone on

Robert Giroux who recently died, was responsible for publishing Flannery O'Connor, Jack Kerouac, and Robert Lowell, but he lost a chance to publish J.D. Salinger, as described in the New York Times (September 6, 2008).  Christopher Lehmann-Haupt wrote a detailed obituary for Giroux (September 6, 2008).
